What is Content Optimisation?

Good content is arguably the most critical ranking factor to SEO success. When optimised correctly, well-written content will help your website become more visible in the SERPs.

For Google and other search engines to begin displaying your website in the SERPs, it is essential to offer enough quality content, which indicates your business or service is an authority within your industry. A website with just a few generic pages, all with low word count, is unlikely to cut the mustard if you’re aiming to achieve regional or national scoring in the search results.

Website content has been a key ranking factor since Google’s founding in September 1998, but became even more crucial following google’s Panda algorithm release in 2011.

At this point, content with little depth and word count, or material which was simply copied from another website (also known as duplicate content) was pushed down the ranks and in some cases, removed from the SERP’s altogether. In 2020 this is still the case, websites with duplicate content will, eventually be dropped from the SERPs, while sites with specific content and high word count are rewarded with improved rankings.

You may be wondering, ‘so what makes good content?’ Well optimised content will inform and add value for the visitor. Optimised content could, for example, be in the form of a useful guide, such as our SEO Glossary, or merely an engaging and creative page which sparks interest for visitors. A good rule of thumb is to take a step back and ask yourself, ‘would I gleam value from reading this?’, if your answer is no, perhaps rework your content or brainstorm what could spark interest for your visitors.
