Alt text is short for ‘alternative text’, this is usually included within your website code and is shown by a web browser if the associated image cannot be located. Alt text was originally designed for, and still useful to, users with visual impairments.
You may have noticed in years gone by that ‘alt’ text used to display when your mouse hovered over a website image but this feature has been dropped and is no longer commonplace.
Alt text and tags also provide a valuable SEO opportunity as they can help search engine bots interpret the content of an image (as they aren’t currently advanced enough to understand visual elements).
Be sure to include descriptive alt tags to help minimise over optimisation and allow search engines to index your website images according to the visual information they contain.
