SEO tips for your business

SEO tips to help get your business on Google

Regardless of whether you run a car restoration centre, or sell gifts online, it is more likely than ever that potential customers will turn to Google first, regardless of what they are searching for.

It is essential that you not only build a great looking website, but also one which is ‘search engine friendly’. By this, we simply mean it is important to accurately describe your product or service so that Google ‘bots’ can understand and display your website in relevant searches.

In today’s online oriented market, organic SEO is an effective way to build and drive traffic to your website, without paying for Google Ads, or other one-off advertisements. Search engine optimisation is a great, long term solution for generating traffic, and therefore potential customers, through organic search. With reports showing that over 70% of people don’t scroll past the first page of Google, good SEO is instrumental in the success of your business online.

We understand that optimising your website and investing in organic SEO can be a daunting process, so we are sharing five SEO tips you can put into action today, which will help increase your traffic.

Focus on mobile first indexing

While not all industries generate a ‘high’ percentage of mobile traffic due to the nature of their product/service, mobile searches have been steadily increasing in popularity since 2016. Google made an official update in mid 2018, where they switched to ‘mobile first indexing’. If your website is not mobile friendly, you will begin to see ‘not mobile friendly’ next to your site on Google search results which could of course impact your business.

Following Google’s mobile first update, it is important to optimise your site for mobile devices to avoid being penalised by Google. This could be in the form of a responsive website design, or simplified ‘mobile’ version of your site. Here at Pixel Hutch, we build speed optimised, responsive websites as standard, so you can rest assured your site will be mobile friendly.

Optimising for mobile also means removing anything which slows your site down, and ensuring it is fast to load on mobile devices and 4G connections. If Google renders your site slower than your competitors, their sites may rank higher on Google, even if your organic SEO techniques are spot on.

Optimise your website for speed

Mobile first design is closely related to optimising your website for speed. This is also a great search engine optimisation tip for maintaining traffic as it can lead to increased customer satisfaction. As we discussed above, it is a known factor considered by Google when ranking websites.

Visitors to your site are less likely to leave straight away if your site is visible quickly too, improving conversion rates. To optimise the speed of your site, we would recommend; compressing ALL images, eliminate render blocking elements (which unnecessarily halt your site from loading), minimise CSS and remove unused lines of code, add an appropriate ‘cache’ setting (this will help the site load quicker for returning visitors).

Review your site structure

Ensuring your site has a clear structure is an essential element of organic search engine optimisation. Regardless of how many other good SEO tips you implement, if your site has a poor structure which isn’t easy to navigate, search engine bots and visitors will find it difficult to understand your business.

Having a clear site structure helps Google search bots to quickly understand your main services and content, allowing the opportunity for it to rank on Googles SERP’s. Moreover, humans visiting your site will be able to navigate around swiftly, meaning they should be able to understand what service or product you offer, quickly.

With improved visitor satisfaction, they are more likely to stay on your site longer, contact you or make a purchase and return in the future. You can implement the following to improve your site structure and aid organic SEO: Breadcrumbs, header navigation (linking to main pages), footer navigation (linking to nearly all pages), submit a sitemap.xml to Google search console, and internal links between pages.

Regularly craft unique, relevant content

Content creation was identified as one of the best SEO trends, with Googles algorithms favour quality, unique content. Ensure that your content is relevant to your product or service, and that it includes your keywords and meta descriptions. Arguably, long content will rank higher than short content, although it really does depend on ensuring you have answered the question visitors came looking for and there are no set guidelines. Your website content should be easily readable by people, not Google bots. If you ‘keyword stuff’ your content, Google may penalise your website and rank you lower than competitors.

Focus on internal and external links

Firstly, as we noted above, Google favours a clear site structure. As you organically grow your website, it is important not to just ‘publish’ each new page. All pages within your site must be clearly linked from other pages within your site in order for both visitors and search engine bots to discover them. This can be in the form of a navigation, links on words within a page, or from an ‘overview’ page which is linked from a main page. Updating your sitemap with new pages is also important, as this ensures no pages are missed by Google.

Building an organic network of quality external links (also referred to as backlinks), is also an important SEO tip. Build relationships with local businesses, both big and small, to build quality links back to your website. This is a timely process and one which cannot be rushed. Don’t ever ‘pay’ for backlinks to your site, this is a black hat SEO technique frowned upon by Google. Google’s search bots will recognise these as poor-quality links and will likely penalise your website in the SERP’s as a result.
